[Beach Huts, Sheringham]

Brian Lewis was born in 1947. After attending Epsom & Guildford Schools of Art, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1967-70. Since 1980, he has lived and worked in North Norfolk, where the coastline continues to inspire his work; not just the sea, beaches and boats, but the villages and towns, churches and old industrial docks. In his observations, the familiar takes on visionary significance; and the quirky becomes the norm.

'While Brian Lewis has long looked like a Norfolk painter, his adopted patch is starting to look like a Brian Lewis. As with Stanley Spencer's Cookham, Beryl Cook,s Plymouth and L.S. Lowry's Salford, places like Cley, Blakeney Point, and Wells-next-the-sea can now be seen in the new light of idiosyncratic paint. So compelling a view rests on wit, strange twists in perspective, brilliant colour contrasts and cunning composition' - Ian Collins 1997.

Lewis uses polymer paint and transparent oil glazes on gesso-prepared panels. His work is exhibited in Norfolk and London, and is held in private collections in Britain and abroad.
